okay i was installing cams... and springs and retainers... got everything back in... and the timing belt slipped off but had someone put it back in timing for me... we checked timing 3 times three different times.. took it off and back on...

the car won't turn over... it cranks... but not turning over...

i think i might have bent a valve?... i have to check today 'm going to do a compressing test..to see it its that...

we thought it might have been a fuel pump but changed it out and its not that (the only reason we thought it was a fuel pump because the pump premiers after not while turning the car on..)

cam angle sensor looks good

thought we flooded the motor... its not that

its not hydro locked checked to see if its turning turns

the 3rd crank or what not it back fired like a gun shot... i guess detonation ?

what the car is doing is... when turning over its trying to die... like the battery its not staying charged... but we hooked up a jumper box to it and jumped it from another car 3-4 hours... its just drain the battery and the other car's lights are dimming from it... we tired two cars... same thing to both cars...

o most important its jumping timing... it shifts a tooth over.. each crank

any suggestions on what it could be?

where i should go from here?

If the timing is off it could be the issue. It shouldn't just jump one tooth off ... even with adjustable gears the teeth should still align to TDC. Reverify TDC on both cams and the crank/flywheel. Also double check the timing tensioner.

It could also be a stuck injector ... what all did you remove when doing the cam install?

Check for 180º rotation on the CAS ... not sure if it's possible on the Evo, but check anyway.

The backfire was likely not detonation and the engine is likely not blown. There is a chance for a bent valve if the cams were more than a couple of degrees off or if the belt isn't tight. You'll know that when you start it up though ...

okay i was thinking it is timing as well... the timing tensioner was crossed thread so it could be leaving a little slack... but let me check the compression and make sure its not a valve... we didn't remove anything else but the valve cover and cams ...cam gears... they are stock cam gears...

anyone know what the compression should be at?

I think 180, someone else confirm this?

Sounds like timing to me. I was one tooth off on my exhaust cam on my 97 Eclipse and the car would crank but not fire. We forgot to take into consideration the fact that there was no tension on the belt when we timed the motor. As soon as tension was on the belt the timing was slightly off.

thats it!... thats what it was doing we set it in time and then when applied tension it was a tooth off... its going to forged to be timed i hope thats its.. i did an air compression test and all 4 cyl. anywhere from 158-160 analog gauge...

i hope that is it and not valves.... prey for me :(

thanks again ryan for doing everything you can!
hope i can make it to dyno day :( sucks i'm planing it and i won't be able to dyno :-P

Yeah if its off time then the valves will be open, even when you think its at TDC based off of crank postion.

you think that can lead to valve failure? .... because while doing the compression test i had to crank it a few times...

If its only off by one tooth then I believe you would be in the clear. I believe that 4G63's are interference engines, so it is possible but you would have to be way out of time. If they knew what they were doing then I bet its only slightly off and your in the clear. Do they have a bore scope at there shop. If not snap on makes an awesome and afforadable bore scope. I picked it up for about $300 and it has a 4" color display. Part # BK5500. Great investment for the shop!

When I was putting my 1g back together I was off I think 2 teeth and fixed it and was ok. So you should be in the clear. :) I was scared sh*tless tho... brand new motor and I was messing it up before I even got to drive it! Then I blew the t-case :( ahh.. the life of a DSM'r LOL

yeah i'm still a little worried but hopefully i'm be alright... buts its coming down to the cam angle sensor being 180 degrees backwards or...timing... forged should let me know by tom

When I had my car compression tested couple weeks ago all four cylinders where at 168 psi and thats with a motor that has 135,000 miles, gotta love 4g63. yay
