As far as the spark plugs I think Advanced Auto Parts carries them. If nothing else plenty of vendors on EvoM sell them. I know lancershop.com sells em.

Thanks for the info. I may need to switch to the BPR8ES's. I'm still running the 7's with an FP green.

Whatever you do don't order from Lancershop. There is a guy on evom that specifically sells spark plugs for a decent price. I ordered mine through Summit Racing and got them in a couple days.

Nice to know. I've got a Summit Racing retail store 10min from my house :D Now that I think about it I have heard some bad things about Lancershop recently. I ordered some fluids from them a while ago and they were fine by me though.

sparkplugs.com has them for <$3.

Wow that is cheap! So, do most of y'all prefer to run plain copper plugs that you have to change out with practically every oil change? The iridiums that I installed in january are finally playing out. Someone recommended the BR8EG's to me b/c they are ideal for high revving engines and come gapped correctly out of the box.

Anyone?

I prefer the Iridium ones because that's what they came with from the factory and they are good for at least 30k miles. Why pay for copper ones that you have to replace after every oil change? That doesn't make good financial sense. If your Iridium ones are needing to be replaced after only 8 months then there is something else wrong with your car. I just replaced mine for the first time, which is after 30k miles and 3 years, and they were still good to go.

I just bought BPR9ES for like 2.50 a piece. I have to find link to the store. And they ship fast as shit, 3 days and I had them here with regular shipping. Also ARP head studs for like 70$.

BPR9ES's? Wouldn't that be 3 steps colder? Isn't that a little overkill?

I think 9ES is two step colder. Because 7ES is stock heat range. They might have wrong info on that www, because wen I checked on lancershop it said 7ES is stock and 8ES is one step and I think that's right info. But also I might be wrong, I never remember these numbers. Well then I'll buy one more set :))

Yeah I just checked, it looks like 7 is stock heat range.

Well I will check with NGK tomorrow about spark plugs for VIII and IX. What's the difference and which one is recommended colder one for IX. Besides the 140$ racing spark plugs :)

hope666
10-10-2008, 02:03 AM
Here one step colder for Evo IX:
DENSO IKH24

EVO IX has longer thread reach 26.5mm than EVO VIII

DENSO IKH27 is two step colder for EVO IX

Update NGK does not have stock kind colder type, only racing ones. So for everybody with EVO IX the way to go is Iridium Denso plugs. They like 44$ on Amazon.

I can sell you set I bought since I will need Denso ones. Give me 10$ for BPR9ES.

Andrew at Dyno4mance told me that most Evo go through copper plugs almost every oil change or two. He said the iridiums would last a little longer. It has been 10 months since I installed my iridiums(right before my tune). I figured since I am running higher than stock boost, that would account for the misfire at high rpms. The stock temp plugs are just played out I guess. I will be installing my new NKG BR8EG's tomorrow(finally). Hopefully that will solve the problem.

Just to clear up some things in this thread ...

there are a few reasons to run copper plugs over iridium.

1) It's difficult to correctly gap iridium plugs. The iridium electrodes are very fragile and standard gapping methods are prone to damage them. Seeing as most iridium replacement plugs come gapped at .044 or .032, it's very likely that most Evo owners will see misfires without re-gapping the plugs to around .022 - .028 (depending on boost level and model).
2) Copper is a better conductor than iridium. Iridium plugs do last longer than copper due to the superior erosion properties of iridium. However, quality copper plugs will produce a more powerful spark and yield more power at the proper gap setting.

as far as cost, I can't really say it's a benefit ... ~$72 every 30k ($3/ea changed at 5k) for copper and ~$44 every 30k ($11/ea changed at 40k) for iridium. But, with the note on gapping iridium plugs, what if you break 2 electrodes while gapping? That puts you at $66 ... not a big difference then.

For the record, I'm still running the stock iridium plugs in my car. But, if there were a good copper replacement for the IX I'd be running them right now. No question.

So for mild bolt-ons, what temp copper plugs would you recommend? 8 or 9ES?

TouringBubble

8ES ... BPR or BR would kind of be irrelevant as they are so close. 9's would be a little too cold and might require a larger gap for adequate spark, which could lead to blow out at high boost. 9's might work though depending on the application and boost level ... for instance, adding an ignition amplifier could warrant using 9's.

BPR8ES will be fine if you have Evo VIII for EVO IX go with IKH24 Denso
one step colder will be fine

I didn't mean to be confusing ... you cannot use BPR8ES, BR8ES, BR7ES, etc on a IX as the reach isn't long enough. I was speaking specifically to a VIII owner.

What should they be gapped to?

TouringBubble
10-13-2008, 12:53 PM
On a VIII, .026 to .028 with normal tuned boost levels.

em1toevo
10-13-2008, 01:05 PM
My car is tuned at 21psi, but it spikes a little bit up to 23. I'm guessing this is due to not having a MBC. I know I need one, but I didn't get one in time for the tune. Do you think that gap would still be sufficient for slightly higher boost levels?

TouringBubble
10-13-2008, 02:34 PM
I'd say to go with .028 and see how it runs. If it breaks up at high RPM drop it to .026.
