so for general grip performance on a relatively stock 4G what is a good tire width combo front and rear. and are there any no no's related to offset. i was thinking like 255 in front and maybe 245 or 255 in the back. AWD, does it require all tires to be same size? thanks!!
PS sorry if this is noob question:)

All tires have to be the same size. If you just want all out grip go for 255, but you'll lose some handling. I'd go with 245 and have a good balance.

Not true... you have to have the same ROLLING diameter tire for AWD cars.... different tire widths are ok... most likely not great but ok. Case and point..... stompy (joel ferhman's BSP STi) ran 315-40-17s V710s in the front and my 275-40-17s in the rear. Unless you are looking to try out new setups I'd just go with 255s and balance your car with suspension and tire pressures.

I would recommend 245/40/17 if on stock rims.

I've heard of the Cyber Evo doing this, but its not something I'd be willing to try with our expensive ass drivetrain.

but with 255's your contact patch is going to be bigger right? So why do you all pretty much recomend 245? not being a smart ass but just want to learn....

oh and if i get wider tires i will most likely be on new rims. im looking at the O.Z. ultralegras(sp) are those pretty light? its hard to find something better than the 14 lb enkeis already on it.... what would the EVO community recommend?
TripperFx3
04-28-2008, 10:24 PM
The O.Z. Superleggas are good and light, but not sure how strong they are. I'd go for Volks or Advans. Also if you go to a larger wheel (18") than that will change everything. If you do end up going to an 18" wheel than a 245/40 18 will be good. If you get a larger 17" rim (17x9) than a 255 will be fine. The reason you don't want to go larger than a 245 on the stock rim is it messes up the sidewall by trying to put a much larger tire on a smaller wheel. Hope that makes sense to you.

my stock evo 8 enkies weighed in at about 21 pounds. (?) is that not correct?

stock bbs weigh in at 18.25 pounds according to mitsubishi liturature, and is suppose to be almost 3 pounds lighter than the enkies.

just my 2 cents, if it helps. but with those weight comparisons, you should have more choices. :D i went with 5zigen. they weigh 18 pounds each. but they are just black. like every other white evo. at the time i was just following proticol, it seems.

What Tripp said is correct. Plus at some point your really putting too much rubber for the rim. Ive also heard that you hurt your turnin when you run too wide rubber without an adjustable suspension, but Im not sure how accurate that is.

does any one know how much the evo 9 enkeis weigh?
jktripp
04-29-2008, 12:10 AM
new evo 9 enkies weigh 1.3 pounds lighter than evo 8 enkies, based on sport compact magazine article. so, by that, it would be a little less than 20 pounds each.

I'm looking to pick up a set of BBS wheels (hopefully before this winter) so I can have dedicated winter wheels (Enkeis) and than dedicated summer wheels (BBS). Its not any wider, but unless your running massive power the stock tire size will be fine. When alls said and done with my car i'm expecting to put at max 400 AWHP (maybe a little more w/ meth) and theres no reason I should lose traction if I go drag racing and have a good tire.

both are great wheels i think. i wouldn't have changed but a curb thought otherwise for me. i got a new set of rims and a new rear axle. not fun. could have spent that money on so many other go fast parts.

My next set will definitely be 245/40/17. I have heard you have to roll the fenders with 255's if you have any kind of drop.

Not true. If you have S-tech's maybe, but I believe even Dylan had the S-tech's with a 255 and he wasn't rolling.

yeah coilovers are definately in the future for me. And im going to go with 255's i think. and if i have to do some rolling then i guess ill do that. lowered cars look and handle so much better. even though the evo is great already. i like the 5zigen type rs i think is what they are called. does anyone have any feedback on those?

Looking to purchase a set of 245s soon. Other than going with the excellent but expensive Advans(OEM) , can anyone give some feedback on the Bridgestone Potenza
RE-01 or the RE-050A as seen on Tire Rack?

RE01r is awesome... when I had my car in STU trim I ran on the bridgestones. They will get hot with extended track use but no worse than falkens (and still better). For autox they were on par with the neovas you can check teh national results for STU adn see that. For a cheaper alternative for the RE01r I'd check out the Dunlop Z1 star spec.
Here is a nice thread on SCCA forums comparing the Neovas, RE01r and the Star Spec

Thanks Meredith. Just spoke a friend, Rory Liu, who does auto X with his silver STi. He's really happy with the Neovas. Also heard good things about the RE01's. Will check the link.
Is there any dealer here in ATL that can compete with Discount Tire other than shopping online with Tire Rack?

Tires don't have to be even. Cusco on their racing Evo IX use 255 front 245 rear to make car turn better. 255 you don't loose any handling... from where I am sorry to say that you took that idea? I am running 255/40 17 for stock wheel with up to 2" drop like my car is, with coilovers you can do a little bit more drop since adjustment is more precise. With 18" you can go up tp 265/35 18". There is no "handling" issues. Always choose your tire wisely, your car comes on semi racing tires, and that how you should keep it Falken Azenis RT-615, Dunlop Z-1 (which I am using), Bfgoodrich or Bridgestone semi racing tires will be your way of choice. You can't cheap out on tires, then your car will not handle shit and then you will complain. Fill them up with nitrogen with slightly higher pressure for street use, I am usually running 34F 31R which is a little more than stock, perfect for driving everyday and some mountain runs. For autoX etc probably you'll have some higher pressure run. Hopefully it will help with your choice. And one more thing, fitment depends on wheel width and offset and 265 tire will fit with proper offset 9" width wheel.

Has anyone run the RT-615's? How well does the tread hold up? I'm running BF Goodrich G Force Sports right now.

Falkens are very good as far as grip, better than stock tires, I will say a little less than Dunlop Z-1 they will last 10000 miles with my driving, Z-1 last a little longer but I have also different suspension geometry that I've done after purchasing Z-1's so that might be a reason for them to hold longer. Anyway great tires. Don't expect anything more than 12000 from set of good tires with amount of grip more than factory Yokohamas.

I suggest either the Dureza Z1's or the Potenza RE01R's. Both have exceptional grip and will last a reasonable amount of time. My honest opinion of the RT-615s is that they are trash, Im sure others will disagree, but I just dont think they hold up very well, for my driving anyways.
