I was curious how many of you changed out your oem stereo in the Evo. I used to have nice stereos in my previous cars. I'm more into performance now, but I do miss the sound quality. I can't complain too much-for a stock stereo the SSL infinity speakers are decent. There is no bass though. The stock 8 in that molded plastic box sucks. I guess the highs sound ok since they are powered by an external infinity amp. I do wish I had kept my focals to put in the Evo...and maybe a decent sub. I bet the Evo's wing would rattle like crazy with some bass added to the equation.

I am down the middle. Like yourself I WAS in to systems heavily, but did not want to weigh the evo down. What I did was add a bass link for some extra umph(placed behind my seat). This does a few things: 1. keep someone from sitting behind me, and two put the bass in-cabin for different reasons. I will add a HU and probably be done. I am pass the defeaning sounds.

I'd just like to have enough bass to feel something. The main thing is sound quality. I have always been an audiophile.

First system:
Kenwood H/U
MB Quart 4" Coaxials and 6.5 Coaxials
Rockford Fosgate punch amps: 40x4 and 300x1 (old school amps were way underrated)
3 JL Audio 8W6 subs

Second system:
Sony H/U
JL audio 6.5 separates in front and 6.5 coaxials in rear (decent-but weren't the quality of Quarts or Focals by any means)
Alpine V12 amps: 40x4 and 300x1 (also underrated IMHO)
Audiomobile Mass 12" sub (amazing sub-hit 143.5 at the dash with one 12! Too bad you can't find these any more)

I had a set of Focal separates to install in the Evo, but I decided against doing another stereo in the Evo when I bought it.

I have owned several subs throughout both set ups. I preferred the JL's and the Audiomobile overall.

I had some some Rockford's but really was a Phoenix Gold guy! I had a list like yours with coaxials, an amp running them, subs, of course another amp, etc. I really don't remember the specifics as its been three years since I have had a system. I have had my evo since Oct of 2005, and the year before that I had taken the system out of my GTi to make it faster. The rest is history.

Like I said, I have been outta the sound game for some time. With HU's i always like Kenwood Excelon(sp?). what is good currently?

I did have some JL 10's and a amp pushing them but took them out to save weight, lol
I do miss the sound sometimes but like the less weight better.

Could you tell a big difference with the added weight, Alan?

In my Ford Escort Station wagon I had a Autotek 640 4 channel pushing my Eclipse 6 1/2 and Kenwood Excelon 5x7's and than another Autotek 1200 watt monoblock push my one Audiobahn 12 in a wavebox. Made 154 dB's :D. In my 240sx all I had were some rockford fosgate speakers that I got cheap when I worked at best buy.

I've got an Alpine (9886) HU w/ iPod cable in the Evo and the clarity and quality of sound really increased just by putting that in. It seems to have a really good internal amp. I'd like to upgrade the factory speakers with some MB Quartz and than go from there as far as adding a sub. If I ever did it'd be removable.

No not really, more so for Mtn. runs were i didn't have to worry about it back there, it was fastened down just didn't want to have to worry about it.

I'm not sure. I have been out of the audio scene for quite a while. I hardly recognize the brands any more.

I'm personally an Alpine fan when it comes to HU's, but if I had the money I'd go with a Pioneer AVIC flip out.

I have the SSL and agree that the bass quality was subpar, but after installing the Pioneer 6900UB head unit it really woke up the stock trunk sub. I actually have to turn down the bass on some songs. Before I installed the Pioneer I was thinking the problem was the speakers and was planning on replacing them but now find that unnecessary.

I may try an aftermarket H/U instead of jumping the gun replacing speakers.
