How many of you guys catch hell for your car obsession?

My wife gives me a hard time about the Evo: every time I put premuim gas in my car, spend too much time cleaning or working on it, or going to car meets in Atl.

i used to, until i told her bye-bye. but before she left i reminded her that i never complained when i had to spend money on the newest couch purse or new shades of make-up or new shoes that matched the new outfit i bought her. but, i was just dating, it's different for you. that's a touchy subject. ouch.....

It's all good. I just have to limit the time(and money) I spend. I just wondered what everyone else goes through to enjoy their cars.

My GF is big into cars and wants to build an RSX-S with a Toda 2.2 liter stroker kit and head kit :D. She doesn't really mind as long as I spend a little money on her. I think 500 bucks out of the 8k I'm spending on my car isn't a bad ratio. That and shes gone or at work for the majority of the time that I work/clean the car, so she doesn't give me too much crap for that lol

I just went and bought a two sets of 1 and 2 heat cycled v710s from Alan Cox..... $400 for eight tires.... but right now my man is crying something about wanting motons on his civic ;)

I'd love to have a stack of slicks at home to slap on for race events. Ahhh....if money grew on trees.

Damn! Thats cheap! V710's are Kumhos race tire correct?

they have been previously "loved" on a club racing car.... as the heat cycles are low they will be fairly sticky. One set looks like it only saw a few laps.

^They're just getting broken in at that point. Now they are ready for some action on the tarmac.

Yup.... heat cycles are what really kill the v710s.... I have some left from my STi that have 120 runs with 20 so heat cycles.... they still have rubber onthem but they are about as grippy as all seasons!

Sorry for the stupid question, but I'm a little ignorant when it comes to race tires. What exactly is a heat cycle for a race tire? Is that when it gets to its optimal temp and than cools off? I'm guessing when it cools off and is than used again it looses some of its grip? Also how does that work? If thats the way it works than it just doesn't click in my mind for some reason. Not doubting you just my curiosity getting the best of me I guess lol.

When you get a new race tire you have to "heat cycle" it before it will grip; it similar to almost "curing" the rubber. A heat cycle is pretty much whenever it gets hot.... if it's cold or raining when you run, your tires will not wear as much. Any time you heat up the tires and then cool them down is a heat cycle; once this happens alot if there is any remaining rubber on the tire it tends not to have the inital grip that it once had.

I guess the physics behind why the tire loses grip with many heat cycles comes down that most rubber/elastomers and plastics don't like to be heated up and cooled down. I'm more familar with rigid plastics not really elastomers, but plastics will lose all sorts of properties and degrade with repeated exposure to heat. I'd imagine it's the same principle driving the rubber to become dried up and lose elasticity...

Now it makes more sense. Thanks for the clarification!
