My 2.3RR 37R Build

Hey guys, thought I would make a new thread dedicated to my current build. I thought some of you would be interested to see my current build. A little history behind my car...

My last setup was a stock block FP Green with HKS 272s all supporting mods, etc. and meth. I made 405hp/386tq on meth. I was doing a few highway pulls against a friend of mine with a 03 560whp Cobra. I was actually about 1/2 car lenght ahead (believe me or not Im not here to debate it, I have witnesses) and my car just shut off, no breaking, clanking, or any noise at all for that matter. I ended up having my car towed home, no fun whatsoever. After consulting my previous shop, which I will leave unnamed for the time being, and consulting a few other shops, I decided to take the car to Forged Performance. Ive had some work done here before and has been nothing short of perfect. Their labor is expensive, but in my opinion worth it. They work on mostly 350z's and G35's but happen to have a AWD Dynamics Dyno. In short, its a great shop, flawless work, great tuner, etc. My car is currently at the shop undergoing the current build.

I talked to Sharif, the owner of Forged Performance, for a long time and decided the direction I wanted to go in depending on the problem with the motor. After the motor was broken down it was concluded that the cause of my motor shutting down was detonation in one of the cylinders. This was caused by a bad tune on my meth map as my pump map never had the smallest issue. This just made me more secure with my decision to switch shops. We talked about what I wanted to do with the build and came up with quite a rediculous, but awesome setup. The mods that are going on the car are listed below:

The hotparts of the turbo kit (turbo manifold, hotside, o2 hosing, and downpipe) will also be sent off to PCI to have a 2000 degree coating put on.

Ill do my best to keep you guys up to date and post any progress on the build. We started this a few week ago and are pretty much just waiting on parts to start showing up. Im assuming the build will be done sometime in April. Im hoping for some pretty good numbers, but we will have to wait and see what it will be capable of. Enjoy :wink:

we talked to AMS last week and they told us 1-2 weeks. Eric said they were finishing it up, so that sounds hopeful. At this point Im just waiting to hear about the HTA37R and whether or not its going to be a long wait on that or not.

Motor ships out tomorow, should be here around Tuesday. Ide say a week from then it should be assembled, another 1-2 weeks for a mild tune, depends on Sharif, and then the breakin, which I will probably do in a week, lol. Then some high hp tuning. Im hoping all in all 3 weeks.

Which means my car is VERY close to being finished. We sent off the hot parts of the turbo to have them 2000 degree heat coated. Im hoping Dylan can start assembly this week and by end of next week we will be getting close. Im trying to be optomistic and think that we wont encounter too many problems. In any case Im incredibly excited.

Looks like I am going with a different cam, according to AMS the Tomei 280s put significant more power than the JUN's, so Im going to go that way and see how it works out.

Ya I already saw that. Its being installed on a IX, which is much more difficult. It was originallly designed to go into a VIII which is a much easier install. The power gains and amount of efficiency is just unreal.

Ya unfortunately my car isnt running and Im not very optomistic that it will be done in the near future. Dylan has been awesome about working on the car, but my car is still not a priority to Sharif, even after dropping $35K on the car. Im so frustrated right now... I honestly just want to beat the shit out of something. I will be truly amazed if the car is done this month. My new job is in Norcross, which is 35 miles each way and me and Jenny have to share a car right now which makes things rediculously hard. She has her own job and stuff to do, but I have to take the car because of the long drive. Ive been very patient up to this point, but Im starting to get pissed. Sorry to vent, Im just in a very bad mood because of this.

the other Z's are his priority because Z Day is coming up. All my parts are at Forged, the car just isnt getting worked on unless Dylan stays really late to work on it. I shouldnt have to buy another car because its taking this long... not what I want to do right now.

+1 man. I didn't know what the circumstances were. Maybe its time for you to confront him as a customer and not a friend (not sure what kind of relationship you have with Shariff). Give him a reasonable time line to finish the car and tell him you'll be taking your business else where unless he finishes the car in a timely manner. Hes supposed to be a good business person in the area and you could report him to the better business bureau.

I talked to Sharif and somewhat worked things out. Ive never been one to get all pissed off in ones face, so I was pretty calm when talking to him. I addressed my frustration and concern. He simply told me that he wanted to get a number of the cars ready for Z day, which I already knew. He also said he cant pull any of the tech's off of their current projects, which I also understand. The only problem I have with that is he keeps giving Dylan new projects before mine, but I dont want to say anything to get Dylan in trouble. He promised that the car would be cranked up, ready for me to drive for the breakin on the 24th, which is inconvenient, but acceptable at this time. I still think Forged is a top notch shop, but am simply frustrated with the unacceptable amount of time the car has been down.

I agree, but I also understand that he is under alot of pressure from some other customers who are also dropping alot of money there aswell, and they are easier projects... As said before, The 24th is inconvenient, but acceptable. Its 2.5 weeks away, which isnt really that terrible in the big scope of things. Also learned that the main advantage of a Dynamics Dyno is that you can do load based breakin periods on the motor. What does this mean to me? Well the motor will be 90% broken in when I get it on the 24th... This means I can do WOT pulls right off the bat, its just recommended that I shift around 7.5, which is more than acceptable. This means that the breakin period will be quite fun ;)

Just FYI since you had your hotside coated. Let the car idle and that coating burn in as it will make the car smell like crap and it smells very caustic. It was burning my lungs lol.

lol thanks, I already know ;) you actually have to do 3 heat cycles with it. Let it idle for awhile, then turn the car off. Then do a few partial throttle pulls, then turn off the car. Then you can do some more aggressive pulls, then turn the car off, etc. Its a gradual breakin of the coating so you dont damage it ;)

He Went To Orlando To Central Florida Turbo And For About 20 Grand He Did All That Beautiful Job In His Car. I Went To Shariff Few Weeks Ago Just To C How Much He Charge And Compare To Orlando And He Will Charge Me Over 500 Dollars Just To Put Cams In My Car. I Say Wao This Guy Is Out Of His Mind. In Ttp In Orlando They Charge Me Only 150. And Ttp Is Ttp. The Best In Orlando In Evos. This Guy Is Killing People In Atlanta. Anyway If You Dont Believe Go To Ttpengineering.com And You Can C For Yourself How Much He Charge To Put Parts In Cars. He Did Some Friends Cars Cheap. He Is A Good Guy. But This Guy Shariff I Wont Even Take Him My Bicycle. If I Open A Shop Here I Be A Million Dollar Man Real Soon. Next Time Bro Just Check Around First. Thats a killer deal. I spent around 500 for cams, timing belt, and headstuds (labor only). Thats the norm to be honest, but if you can get TTP to do it for 150 than by all means go for it. TTP does good work.

I understand what yo are saying, but Sharif is not ripping me off by any means. He is giving me an absolute killer deal on labor. Almost all of what I am paying is in parts. 90% of the parts are AMS and HKS parts, which are not cheap. I understand your view on Forged as they are expensive. I also appreciate you looking out for me, but I think as far as labor goes, Ive got a better deal at Forged than anywhere else. I dont think even TTP would charge me less than Forged. My final cost on everything for this project stands at $37xxx and only $3K of that is labor. This setup should be 800hp range aswell. Once again, thank you very much for your input. I think once I have the car back I will be very satisfied with how everything turned out, Ive just been frustrated in the past week and probably should not have been so vocal about my frustration.

^^^lol Agreed. I do all my own maintence at least. I just don't feel like going through the hassle of doing cams in my apartment parking lot lol. If I had a garage w/ lifts like you military boys have I'd be all over it!

I would probably do my own labor except for the fact that I have no idea how to do a motor swap or how to assemble an entire motor, or how to put a motor in time, etc. Plus its over 60 hours of labor, probably 100 if you take your time. There is alot more involved than you might imagine.

it took us about 2 weeks after work to do a 2.3 swap down here in a garage......get a couple guys together and slowly work on it and it will save you butt loads of cash....

thats cool though for someone who doesent know how to do all that i guess having someone trustworthy do it for you in a shop aint too bad........but you are there all the time anyways so at least you know whats going on....

Thats a killer deal. I spent around 500 for cams, timing belt, and headstuds (labor only). Thats the norm to be honest, but if you can get TTP to do it for 150 than by all means go for it. TTP does good work.


If that price was total for all, then 250 was on timing belt labor. then its about 100 for head stubs so that about 150 left for cams. 500 dollars for cams is alot of money as in getting ripped off.

And a shop around here wanted 200.00
Batleground also was around 250

True, but then he can't pass emissons. He'd have to go to the factory and have them redo the ECU with the proper immoblizer codes and reload the VIN into the new ECU. Its an expensive and PITA thing to have to do. I highly doubt the ECU is bad though as it just doesn't go bad all of a sudden. It'd have to have a shock or something sent to it.

Thanks God the FCon is such a badass system. We simply bypassed the stock ECU and had the FCon control the fuel power, lol. Sometimes it pays off to buy the best parts on the market. Oh btw...

Just a quick update. The car is still on the dyno and I just cant explain to you how rediculous this motor is. Its just being broken in at the moment. We havnt even done any hard pulls or anything.

She is still on wastegate pressure! No changes in timing or boost, etc. She is just running on the base FCon map with a few small changes to get the A/F where we want it.

We took her down to Barrett Pkwy last night and everyone flipped their shit, lol. The car even as it puts you back in your seat pretty good. Sharif is going to drive here for a couple of days and double check to make sure that everything is up to his standards. I should have the car back for the 1500 mile breakin period on Tuesday. Its actually not as bad as you would think. I think we are seeing full boost around 4500-5000 right now, but that should get better once the boost controller is hooked up and we actually decide to add boost, lol. Also you have to understand that I now have an amazing amount of torque while I am in lag, so it pulls hard without boost, lol. Its a phenomenal feeling.

Nice vid! I love the sound of BIG turbos after shifts!!! Rob, a HTA 3071 with a 2.3 should give you crazy spool. I mean Ryan's spooling a big HTA 37R by 4500. Thats normally what you get when driving a 2.0 and regular 35r. So think on that when you go big turbo shopping :D.

I think you would be surprised. With the 2.3 the lag is so short its kinda laughable. Yes, it hits hard around 4500, but the car revs so damn fast. It takes less than 2 seconds to get from 2500 to 4500.

I remember there was a guy on EvoM (Smokedmustang I think) that was using a 2.3 with a TME 6.5 and loved it. So a 2.3 with a 20g like you have would be a potent machine nonetheless. You can always upgrade the turbo later.

I'm fully aware of this. I believe he actually admitted it to running out of steam at 6500 (conventional 2.3 stroker though), so this was a good set up for him. Incredible response though.

2.3L and FP green would be a killer auto-x setup, but you are right, it is really maxed out. 3065 or GT30R would be a better suited turbo for a stroker, but at that point I'd just do the traditional 2.3L 35R combo.

Just heard from Dylan that the car put down 496whp on Sharif's heartbreaker dyno! Its currently on 26 psi and is blowing out the spark. Hopefully Sharif can jump in here and chime in. He can probably give you better details. All I have heard is what Dylan told me. Exciting numbers though!

Hi everyone, here are the low boost 93 octane pump gas charts. Even at 500whp, I was seeing some periodic spark break-up, so I dialed the boost down a little bit for now. COP is on order. :) Ryan wants to see low 500whp range on pump. This turbo really lives for race fuel, but I am happy with the results on pump. For reference, a bone stock Evo8 does about 190-200 whp on our Dyno Dynamics....it's a heart breaker. I made a small video as well...hope you all enjoy.

we wont be running 40psi on pump, only on race gas. I think we will end up around 28-30psi on pump, it all depends what Sharif believes will be the best setup. I believe it will also be running around 42-43psi on C16, but once again, it all depends what Sharif believes the motor can handle. Better safe than sorry, especially considering the crazy power this thing is already making.

Hey guys, we have updated numbers! Things just seem to be getting better and better. Sharif and the guys at Forged made a few very changes and the results were very impressive. They removed the Sun Auto ignition amplifier that I had on the car and changed out the spark plugs to 2 step colder plugs and picked up an amazing 18whp ontop of what I previously made. Ontop of that, the car ran much smoother and wasnt blowing spark. Sharif added another 1psi of boost and the car made an additional 20whp. The car is currently sitting on 533.5whp on the Dynamics at 27psi. We are still running the stock ignition until the COP arrives. Hopefully by the end of the weekend we will have even better results. ;) Im hoping Sharif will get on here later tonight and post the new graphs. Its amazing that spark plugs and 1psi can get you 38whp!

Anyways, we retuned with some fresh two step colder NGK coppers, and ditched the ignition amplifier, and got some really nice results. Still on pump gas and stock ignition system, and 27psi for now. :) The car pulls like a raped ape! I never had a clean run previously at 26psi....now she pulls really cleanly!

Wow! Looking forward to a ride man! I'm suprised that even with the 2.3 your not making power until about 5k, but I also understand it's still not fully tuned and you will probably gain some spool once everything is seated in.

You also have to realize that the curve looks much different that a dyno from Buschur racing due to the difference in the dyno. I talked to Sharif about it earlier today and he confirmed that because the Dynamics is a load based dyno it looks much lazier than the exact pull would look like on Buschur's dyno. When your behind the wheel it doesnt feel lazy at all and the power is breathetaking.

:O Shows what I know about Buschur's dyno. Sorry for the misinformation. COP is still at Forged but not on the car. Also, I have decided to go a different direction with the car. The car is being turned into a total track car. I drove it up to the track this past weekend with Forged for the track day. I did not plan to enter it at all, but Robispec was there and urged me to enter. After debating about it for a very long time we entered and destroyed everyone in our class. Robi said it wasnt lazy at all for the track and after driving it myself for awhile on the track decided thats what I want to do with the car. I honestly have no more desire to race on the street, Im completely hooked on time attack now. We're going to be prepping the car over the next 3 weeks to perform at its peak for the next event.

Say what you want, but this is a personal decision I have made. I had 1000x more fun on a road coarse than I ever have had street racing. I know phil will have a field day with this one, and honestly I dont care.

In response to your question Nick, final numbers may be over a month out. We're not incredibly concerned about tuning it for peak power righ now, although Im sure we will do it just to find out. We're going to set it up for a 600whp map for the track and may not even track it that high. We only ran it at 450 this past weekend and it was amazing to see the times we put down with the lightly modded suspension, brakes, and tires.

Sorry if this comes as a dissapointment to anyone, but I for one and incredibly excited about this. Robispec will be sponsoring the car aswell, but Ill make a new thread about that.

We're running street class this season, so full interior is required, lol. We just happen to be running faster than 95% of the modified class cars. I know I know, competing in street class is just flatout hilarious though. We are planning on running modified aswell though. In either case, I am holding onto the interior ;)
