View Full Version : Converting to Speed Density

So I've been debating on it for a while. Not sure if I want to do it on my own or pay someone to do it. Not sure if any local shop is capable of doing it and I don't really want to pay someone to either a)be someone's guinea pig or b)eff my car up.

I'm trying to get some clear instructions on how to do it since the info is all scattered around EVOM. Anyone here go speed density. If so who did it and what has your experience been?

I think he had some issues and I'm not sure if he stayed SD...I'll text him. I know he had his car up at Topspeed. I already PM's Cicio.

I'm still running SD but NOBODY in GA is capable of tuning it well so unless you plan to take the trip to AWD in Coral Springs then I'd say don't do it. I can help you set it up if you go that route. It's not a big deal to do. Do plenty of logs with the MAF before you switch because that will help your tuner get the VE tables set up right. I went from MAFT Pro to SD and wasn't able to do that and it definitely makes their job harder. Your other option is remote tuning but it will take a while to get dialed in. Unfortunately for me I just haven't had the time with my car to get it squared away.

Just like I thought. So we're on our own. Ok Andy. I think I'm going to get it squared away.....hell if I can figure it out then I can help you.

Most remote tuners don't mess with SD setup due to the initial dial in procedure being such a PITA. Andy can attest to that. I'm not sure I'll offer to do it again, especially on a setup with no base to work from, like his 2.3. we would make progress, then back track over and over ... very tedious. He got fed up with it, and I don't blame him. Again ... a PITA.

Once it's set up though, tuning isn't that difficult. you're basically just switching the load reference from MAF to MAP. Everything still works and tunes the same.

Although irritated with my car I never really got fed up with the tuning. I knew going into it that there would be alot to work throug to get it dialed in and tuned. Then I went without my car for a long time and now have got some changes in mind. Figure I don't wanna mess with the tune till I'm done messing with the car. Now that the M3 is running good I'm gonna repaint it soon and then the Evo will be home for good mostly.

What was the biggest problem for you Matt. Would you have as much problems with a stock 2.0? One that you've tuned already. LOL.

One of the biggest things would be having currnt MAF logs to use to set up the VE tables I believe. I wasn't able to get these so my tune was a guessing game till we get settings that were correct. I'm sure the 2.3 didn't help much either though.

Matt, on a side note. Do you happen to have a link to something showing how to set up my AEM for logging through the ECU like you mentioned?

Your going AEM now Andy? Matt did my last tune so he may have better luck on my car. So Matt, want to a stab?

shunderwunder
09-14-2010, 06:26 PM
no I have the new AEM analog widebad but it doesn't have the serial signal wire to log with like the AEM UEGO. Matt said someone has a way to log it through the ECU with the 5v signal wire.

Oh wow didn't know that. I'm going to get speed density working on my car. Determined now. I thought topspeed helped but I guess that's why cicio hasn't gotten back to me.

What's the advantages of going SD for sumbody not looking for say 600plus? Besides that sexy ass tial bov!

We have done sd evo's and they do just fine.

SD on stock ECU?

+1
Did you setup and tune a stock ECU SD setup from scratch or just tune on that was previously setup?

For me I want the driveability. When its set up the right way the car drives smoother. They say you make more power but thats not why I'm doing it. Plus its basically plug and play with the physical components. The hardest part is the ECU....there are tutorials so I could do it on my own....but having never done it I don't want to screw anything up.

Really sorry I have not replied to the PM. There is something messed up with my setting on EVOATL the thing doesn't email me when I get a PM. I just saw it now. .... I need to get with Alex and figure out why its not emailing me.

As far as the SD stuff in concerned that is honestly more of a question for Doug. However he is super busy for the next few days so I will get all the info from him and PM you back ASAP. There is NOTHING that man can't tune, and do it with the best of them. I have thrown some pretty tricky stuff at him lately...last week I gave him a Volvo that he had to solder leads on to the DME chips in order to edit the raw data :D....that was fun... Anyhow...will get back to you asap man...again my apologies.

Au contraire :)

Keep in mind that I said nobody in GA is capable of tuning itWELL. While I know that with enough time to mess with it that any good tuner should be able to get it dialed in and tuned but as of right now I've yet to find a local tuner that is already familiar with it and capable of tuning it to it's full potential. And my current SD tune is a TopSpeed tune. ;)

Hurell, be aware that it's not really "plug and play." The initial tuning process on the stock ECU is kind of a pain, even if you have the MAF logs and a 2.0 base map to start with.

I'm also not sold on it being better than a MAF setup as far as driveability. Basically, you have tons more resolution to work with with the MAF, so it SHOULD be the better choice. If there is some weird phenomenon that I'm not aware of that happens when you switch to SD, then I may be wrong ... but I haven't heard of one. I can kind of see a benefit to metering the air just before it enters the cylinder rather than at the intake filter, but what that amounts to doesn't register from what I've seen.

there are few reasons, IMO, to switch to SD. A huge turbo is one, as it can overrun the limit on the stock MAF. Also, the ability to use a VTA BOV comes in to play with big turbos and big boost where the improved reaction time is beneficial. Also, if you have constant troubles with losing charge pipes (again, lots of boost), then SD will allow you to drive the car with big leaks.

Otherwise, it's a novelty. I generally recommend that people don't convert if it's not needed.

Yes SD on stock ECU, and we are doing an AEM now (that doesnt really count though).

If I dont respond quickly its because I don't get on here as much anymore. The shop is super busy and I only get on to see if people are actually posting. You can give me a call if you like.

No worries.

Matt I'm thinking a few things and based on the setup I'm ultimately going to go with I'll need to go SD anyways.

ive been thinking about going SD also but then I read that its really not needed till you go over 600-700 hp so I put it off till I upgrade the turbo, let us know how it all works out

Apex i ITR

Mixed reviews.....some reputable tuners claims it helps with anything over 400 some claim it doesn't really help at all. Some swear by the better driveability.

Since there is basically a plug and play kit for the hardware I figured I'd give it a go and see if it works out.
