How hard is Portuguese compared to Spanish? I am majoring in Spanish, but I have to take some extra filler classes to keep my status as a full time student. I have taken various amounts of other languages such as French, Chinese, etc. I figured that Ed and Jr could definitely give me some insight, but maybe some others might know it as well.

Portuguese is a lot like spanish, there are a lot of similar if not the same words. The way it is said might be different, but usually spelled the same... spanish speakers cant usually understand us, but we understand them just fine... it is very hard for english speakers to grasp the concept that there are words that are feminine and masculine and you have to use the correct syntax to make a sentence, and also there is literally like 20 different conjugations for a single verb... im not sure how spanish compares to that, but i think it is harder.

jr what do you think

I think it will be easier since I am used to Spanish, but I definitely know that there are differences. The masc/fem and different conjugations aren't that bad to learn.

I agree Tripp. Chinese was easier to learn IMHO. You get a character workbook to practice writing the characters. Most all words build off of around a 100 or so basic characters. The hard part is the phonetics(speaking) since one character can have several meanings depending on how it is pronounced. Although I only took 2 semesters...

Thats why im learning Chinese 2nd. The writing is the same as Japanese for the most part, but the like you said the phonetics is really hard.

The Chinese actually had a joke that said that the Japanese stole one Kanji (letter/symbol) every time the Japanese invaded lol.

That joke is almost true. The written languages are very similar.
