View Full Version : Dyno Dynamics vs. Dynojet

Hey everyone!
I know there's been a lot of discussion about the differences in Dyno Dynamics vs. Dynojet power numbers. Well here's a little comparison for everyone. I'm hope this sheds some light on some of the misconceptions that pop up when comparing different dyno types.
This EVO X was tuned on a Dynojet at another local shop on Monday. The owner of the EVO, a mutual customer of ours, stopped by yesterday night and we threw his car on our Dyno Dynamics to see how the numbers would compare.
Although, there are a few factors that would cause a variance in the % difference, this particular example shows that the Dyno Dynamics dyno reads ~12% lower in peak power than the Dynojet dyno. It's not called the 'Heart Breaker' dyno for nothing :)

The curves are basically the same though, which is the important part that many people forget. It's good to see that, especially since many people say that DynoJets aren't great for turbo cars and skew the load on the car. Based on this comparison, I'd say that's not the case, or at least it's not notable on this specific dyno.

ok it reads lower.. AND??? lol...
308 is still respectable power on forged dyno.. lucas - grats btw!!

I guess thats why drag strip numbers are the only way to truly tell what kind of power a car has and dyno's are tools for tuning.
Its hard to not want to see the "numbers" for dick swinging rights. I'm trying to re-program myself

I consider dynos a good way to find out how much horsepower you pick up after adding mods, that's about it.

Yeah, that's an acceptable practice too, but you want to stay on the same dyno of course. And, on a lower reading dyno, you will see smaller gains from mods as well as the shift in power readings is a percentage (as mentioned in the OP), so you should expect to see a similar percentage decrease in gains from mods.
But I'm with Hurell. Use DynoJet, Dyno Dynamics, DynaPak, whatever you want to tune, then go to the track and see how you run in comparison to someone with the same power numbers.
I remember a night out at Steele when a guy showed up with his Chicago-built "420hp" 30R car and started talking crap to the locals. Well, he was owned by a ~365hp stock turbo IX on 93+toluene that trapped basically the same as his car.
So, basically, pick a dyno to compare YOURSELF to and stick with it. Speaking of, I still need to get back over to Top Speed and get a new graph ... I wonder if you guys still have my baseline from back in '06 ... :o

This was posted because there has been some discussion locally about the differences in how the dyno reads. Some believe there is a significant difference where others were claiming they read the same or similar. Same car, same tune, same power, just 2 different readings. Nothing positive or negative is being posted here, it's just for informational use...

Very true, but that's also relative to the driver. Regardless of what knowledge most people have, almost everyone gets caught up in the numbers game. It's hard for most to fathom that a 42whp difference can be seen on a 300-350whp just from using a different type of dyno.

I'll take you up on that the next time I'm in town ... I'll have to lug some corn fuel down with me to make the trip. ;)

It's nice to see the differences how they compare. It would be cool to see both graphs scaled the same so that we could see the curve differences a little easier.

Maybe I spoke too soon ... TQ looks basically identical, but the HP calculation is a bit different between the two ...
EDIT :: Or maybe if I aligned the RPM correctly ... lol
that's better ... still a slight skew inthe HP curve, but not much.

That's alot better Matt. It shows basically the same curve.
