View Full Version : My car feels so much better

I finally got off my butt and installed my IX dp (and the extra O2 bung capoff). All I can say is-WOW! My car sounds and feels totally different. I do believe that the Megan 03-04 dp wasn't snug enough and leaked airflow. For you subie guys, the 03-04 dp didn't clear certain areas under the car that were a little different on the 05-06 evos which I have. Also the extra O2 bung being plugged up sounds SOOOOO much better. The car just didn't seem as smooth(idling and driving) as it does now. I guess it has something to do with the car having an even exhaust airflow.

The only downside is that I had to remove one of the front tie bars because it pushed in on the new dp too much when you reinstall it. I'm just not comfortable with the pipe constantly rubbing on my new dp. I have read that companies such as cusco make a new bar that is angled like this \___/ to work with aftermarket downpipes. I hate to leave that bar off if I am planning to go on mtn runs in the spring. I did leave it off for now though.

I am planning to install my XM express this weekend if I have time.

u can try to use spacers or even washers so u can have enough room for your tie bar

em1toevo
12-03-2007, 02:07 PM
Will that sacrifice the strength of the contact points with extra washers stacked in between the bar and the chassis? I thought about that already, but I was worried that it wouldn't be as strong as the bar being braced right up against the chassis like stock.

alg626
12-03-2007, 02:10 PM
i wouldn't thinl it would make a big diifference they make spacers for this type of stuff, so it can't be that bad

em1toevo
12-03-2007, 03:19 PM
It's cheaper than buying a new bar. I will try adding some spacers this weekend.

mike.p
12-04-2007, 12:55 AM
yeah you deff can use washers..thats what most kits come with big washer/bushings so the front bracing clears the dp

I know Ed also put spacers in, I dont believe it hurt his handling, although you cant tell with his driving, lol.

yes i put spacers and it feels the same... i got them from dyno4mance, but im sure you can have it made in athens, all it is is a little 1" (approximately) high block with a hole in the middle for the screw... i think its made of aluminum.

ryan will be punched in the face when i see him, if anyone wants to note that.

alg626
12-06-2007, 01:30 PM
what model Evo is it? VIII or IX

alg626
12-06-2007, 02:09 PM
FOR A VIII

3"cat-back
3" cat-delete or high flow cat
3"downpipe
O2 housing
drop-in air filter
MBC
tune
thats around 280-310whp depending on tune and dyno

Lower IC pipe
Walbro fuel pump
cams w/ head studs (need a tune after cams for sure)
that will be around 330-345whp

thats the quitest way to get power and the cheapest

intake is not needed until 400whp (also need to be tuned for an intake)
intercooler doesn't need upgraded until bigger turbo
Upper IC pipe don't really gain anything either
If you do upgrade these, you do get alittle quicker spool and will pick up some hp but you won't net alot

em1toevo
12-06-2007, 02:18 PM
^Those are the performance basics. You won't need more than the mentioned bolt-ons unless you are serious about hp.

well i don't know much about good tire and rim combo's, sorry

but a 3" turbo back exhaust $550.00
drop-in filter $65.00
boost controller $85.00
tune $50 for mail-in if u have the tacttrix cable
$300.00-$400.00 custom tune

good for about 320-330whp IX's make more power, but some think they were under-estimated from the factory having more like 310-315bhp since most dyno'ed at 240-260whp stock

I dont recommend Topspeed, but they may be the closest shop to you. I know me and Ed go to a shop up in Calhoun, but thats quite a drive. You can also try Forged, which is off of hwy 41 in marietta. As for the tires, for that size rim go with a 255/35/18. You should have no rubbing issues.

em1toevo
12-07-2007, 02:54 PM
I agree with Ryan(BlewByYouEvoVIII) about the tire size. You may want to think about what kind of performance and durability you are looking for. If you only care about "show" then I would just get a cheaper tire in that size.

I dont believe the Evo designers meant for it to be a show car, although you can do a few things to make it look much more agresssive. I think thats about all you can do. Its not exactly a beautiful car, but it does look mean :)

I have been to TopSpeed a couple of times and had bad experiences both times. They also have a semi lengthy record of blowing up Evos on their dyno. They also treated me very poorly when I talked with them. They just assume you know nothing about your car and they make a point of showing that to you. If that doesnt bother you then be my guest ;) Im not trying to just bash TopSpeed, I just know of at least 2 shops that will take care of you much better then they will.

That drop should be fine, you shouldnt have any rubbing issues, although it may be close. You shouldnt have any rubbing issues unless you go with a 265 width. I know a bunch of guys running Swift springs, which I believe are 1.4 or 1.5 drop in the front and .8 in the rear. They are also running 18s. If you rub dont get mad at me! Good luck with that!

jamsky
12-09-2007, 03:41 AM
Thanks for the advice dude! Well maybe I can come and visit you in Kenessaw to see you and your nice Evo. Dont worry I will not blame you if it does rub, LOL!:D Seriously, can I put 245/40/18 without any rubbing issues?

I believe those batteries are usually special order only, not many places stock them. However, Forged performance off of 41 has Braile batteries, which are the same thing. I dont know if they stock them or not, but if they dont they can get them very quickly. Give them a call.

I actually remember reading that some have gotten water into them. I believe that it was in more humid climates though (Florida i think). GA can get pretty bad in the summer, so im not sure if they'll hold through the summer. Theres no reason you can't bake them and re-seal them though. You'll still come out 280 bucks cheaper lol.

Well I noticed today that my damn calipers are peeling:mad:. I can't for the freaking life of me figure out why Brembo put such a crappy clearcoat on there. I will probably have them repainted later on. But first, I am going to try to get them warrantied. Always something...

i have a trick......lightly sand them or get the rough edge from around were its peeling....then go get some dupont truck/suv clearcoat or one with a rattle ball in it at a local advance auto and re-spray them with clear..very simple to do...i had to do mine and they look brand new!!!!

01-12-2008, 02:27 PM
This is exactly who I bought mine from on ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/JDM-H11-NOKYA-2500K-Hyper-Yellow-Head-Light-Bulbs_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33710QQihZ017QQit emZ270202345790QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW

The bulbs are so easy to change out too. All you have to do is unplug the harness to the bulb and twist the back of the bulb a 1/4 turn and pull out. DO NOT TOUCH THE BULBS THOUGH!!!! They will pop when you turn them on. Also, try not to scratch the bulb surface against anything when putting them back in. Quite simple really. I did mine in 2 minutes in the dark with a flash light.

Thats the full CF wing than! Badass!

I haven't had time to get what I wanted done, but I did take some time friday evening to change my pads out since the rears were about to eat into the rotors. I have to say it stops much better with the Hawk HPS pads. Can't wait to get the stainless steel lines and motul fluid done.

I figured I'd give this thread a little update. I picked up a metal Evo IX bov to hold boost better. I will be getting a manual boost controller soon.

My Megan DP was one of my favourite power mods. Instantly felt and heard the difference. Boost spiked an extra PSI or so.

Brett, did you ever get those brakes installed?

em1toevo

I put the pads on myself, but I still haven't installed the s.s. lines or the motul fluid. Even the pads alone, made a big difference. I can't imagine how they compare to your pads.

I loved the Ferodo's, SS lines, Motul fluid & slotted stoptech rotors on my IX.
I just hated all the break dust - hahaha.

I have had the Forge unoes since one month after getting my car(november 2005), and now that my car is alot o buschur, I STILL have the Unos. If you get the sticking ball problem(look up on evom), use some red bearing grease. I lubed mine up once in the beginning of 06, and have'nt had that problem since!

There's not anything wrong with it. It just doesn't fit the motif I'm going for in my engine bay. :D I only have one more item to receive before I am done with it; the Carbign Craft cam gear cover. I'm looking forward to some warmer weather so I can wash it and take plenty of pictures.

It came with a second spring. Which one did you use?

If memory serves me correct, which it normaly does not. i am on the stiff spring. I tried the lighter one and it would not boost past 16-18 psi.

em1toevo
01-24-2009, 01:32 PM
^I think most Evo owners use the stiff spring.

TripperFx3
01-24-2009, 02:26 PM
If your doing anything over 19psi then the stiff spring is needed. Even before the Green I put the stiff spring in and was running 22 psi with barely a twist of the knob.

Chemwarrior
01-24-2009, 03:34 PM
I installed the mbc and I can tell the soft spring is in there because it won't go over 17psi. I'm going to put the other spring in and see what that does.

Chemwarrior
01-24-2009, 06:55 PM
Well I must not have turned the soft spring enough because I put the stiffer spring in and it wouldn't go below 25 psi. I put the soft spring back in and turned it enough to reach my desired psi.

em1toevo
01-24-2009, 09:30 PM
Do you mess with your boost level much? I plan on setting the Hallman and leaving it there.

No, I do the same thing.

TripperFx3

I have to fool with mine a good bit, but we have extreme temp changes from morning to afternoon to night.

Chemwarrior

I have noticed the peak boost will change with vast temperature changes.

em1toevo

I think there is nothing you can do about the cold air spiking the boost a few psi.

Evolvedgti

I agree, with a mbc it it set to spring tension not psi per say. more dense air equals more psi. I would assume that a EBC would hold the same psi no matter the weather due to being electronically controled. I have never had an EBC so I am just guessing.

I had a profec B Spec II on my SR20 and it never faltered summer to winter. The only reason I had the B Spec II was because I didn't have a boost gauge in my 240, so the unit was my controller and gauge. If you don't want to spend the money on the Spec II then you can get the Type S which operates the same, but has no digital read out and I think is about 100-150 cheaper.
