So it's time for me to get new tires which I need help with...

What are the best tires for DD and can last me a good long while?

I like the ones that Jason ( Hikaru ) has and I believe they are dunlops... and which tire size should I roll with?

How are the Toyo Proxy 4s?

Help please....

I've had Proxes on almost every car I;'ve owned.....they are ok for longevity but not much else. I have had no personal experience with the Starspecs but I hear good things about them. I'm rocking Bridgestone RE710's.....absolutely love these in the wet and dry. Remains to be seen what kind of life I get out of them,......Only other tire I like that I've tried is the Falken RT615's.

three choices, well 2 really.....Dunlop Z1 Star Spec or Bridgestone RE11. The Advan AD08 Neova are supposed to be pretty good but I don't know anyone that rocks them. On the stock wheel get 255/40 17. I am getting great tire wear on my star specs and I know Ryan got great wear from his RE11's too.

I just got a set of yokohama S Drive's.... my friend has been running them on his STi for over a year now with no problems whatsoever. I really like them so far on the evo and they arent overly expensive (about 175 a tire, 700 a set)

I had the proxes 4 on my GTI for 40k +. H is right longevity is great, but not much of a tire other than that not so much

That's funny that you say that because I was actually almost about the KDWs but decided to roll with Dunlops...

I raced and daily drove KDWs for almost 2 seasons before switching to slicks. Decent tire, but the road noise it loud. Dunlops were my next choice based on CarandDriver's tire test. Would've went with Dunlops if I still Autox'd on street tires but the Hankooks are over $250 cheaper, have a much higher treadwear rating, which is more useful (to me) as a DD tire and came in 2nd place which isn't too shabby considering the competition. (link to comparison test if interested --->Test (http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/comparisons/09q2/tire_test_nine_affordable_summer_tires_take_on_the _michelin_ps2-comparison_tests) ) Oh, and they say Evo on the sidewall which was a bonus for me :)

Just my .02

^ yeah for DDing i think the dunlops aren't that great bc treadwear rating... 200aa isn't going to last you past 10-15k miles... there are better choices for DD tires with a better treadwear and that do decent on spirt driving...but the dunlops are a good tire none the less... just wear to quick for DDing..

^^I beg to differ. I've got 12,000+ miles of daily driving on my dunlops and still have gobs of tread left. When you look at it, the only mod that directly affects all aspects of car performance is the tires. We all bought an Evo right? We all knew maintenance costs and cost of upkeep was going to be a biotch right? So why on earth would you skimp on tires? I understand we are all on a budget, but spend the money where it counts and not on fancy turbo timers, titamium lug nuts, carbon UK badges, ect...

That's just the way I see it. And in the sizing Jamil wants (255/40 17) I think these tires are one of the best bang for the buck/duel purpose tires out there!

Add the BFG KDW is an OK tire but not even in the same league as the *Spec, RE11, A048

The dunlops are the best bang for the buck! 22,000 miles, 2 autox, numerious mountain drives, and only 3 rotations! I am on my 3rd set! I love them!!

yeah i never said cheap out on tires... thats the only thing keeping you alive... have you guys looked into the sumitomo HTR Z III....i personal think its a better DD tire then the star spec/// not agruing but... just stating why below...and you have to remember "DD" tire...

all sizes are 255/40/17

all info from tirerack.com
300AA rating vs dunlop 200AA raiting
cost 103 per tire vs dunlop 159 per tire
saving you a good $224 per set...and it lasting longer

slalom time
dry
sumitomo -4.14
dunlop-3.97

wet
sumitomo -4.65
dunlop-4.12

lap time
dry
sumitomo -30.07
dunlop-29.05

wet
sumitomo -32.44
dunlop-30.38

stopping 50-0
dry
sumitomo -83.9
dunlop-81.0

cornering g force
dry
sumitomo -.95
dunlop-.97

didn't get all the specs.... but considering your saving almost 200 plus dollars and its going to last you a good 7200 miles longer....according to the utqg rating = 100 utqg= 7200 miles

so dunlops according to utqg rating = 14400
and sumitomo= 21600

for the cost and difference in laptime etc... i think the sumitomo is a better "DD" tire... where the dunlop is still a better track tire....

It's totally all good man. No argument from me. Those are great compartive specs! They clearly show the dunlop is a better performing tire but the ugqt ratings are a little misleading. There is no real scale of measurement between manufacturers so they can pretty much stamp what they want on it. Kuruma has already shown that even with hard use those tires blow the tread wear rating outta the water. Those ratings are definately NOT real world numbers....

A really good friend of mine in Greenville, SC told me once at you really cannot go by treadware rating, because most manufactures test there rating in different ways. It's not as standardized as you think. He is a lawyer for Michelin.

tread rating is just another tool for marketing.

as long as you dont go higher than what the actual tire rating is its ok.

so 500 tread wear tire can advertise as 100 treadwear... not that they would... it just sounds like they are stickier.

nitto nto1r. best street/track tire i have ever used. they will last roughly 8000 ish miles

Dunlop Z1 Star Spec

In this order for performance:

Bridgestone Potenza RE-11
Advan AD08 Neova
Dunlop Z1 Star Spec

In this order for life:

Dunlop Z1 Star Spec
Bridgestone Potenza RE-11
Advan AD08 Neova

I ran 3 track days and 18,000 miles on my RE-11s and still had about 25-30% tread remaining on them. I can only imagine what they would have done with no track use. The Dunlop Z1 Star Spec is the best bang for the buck as the RE-11 costs a considerable amount more. If you don't mind spending the extra cash the RE-11 is far superior in performance, or it has been in my experience.

Personally, the hands down best all-around tire I've run is the BFG G-Force Sport. Good dry traction, really good wet traction, long life and affordable. I'm currently running the T/A KDWs and they seem a little stickier with about the same wet traction, but they were originally about $60 more per tire. I got these on clearance from Tire Rack.

If you want performance, the Z1 SS is hard to beat. Amazing in the dry and acceptable in the wet ... daily drivable. I currently race on Kumho XSs, but there is no way I'd DD them due to their horrid wet traction.

+1 on the Dunlop Z1

I ran these tires during the TopSpeed time attack at Talledega...

Ran great. 11k miles later, still got a good amount of tread. Highly recommended!
