View Full Version : Weird vibration when turning my wheel to the right

I get this weird vibration whenever I turn my wheel to the right. It almost feels like the vibration you would get when driving over those drunk bumps on the side of the road, but it is cyclic not continual. It will only do it when turning the steering wheel to the right when moving. I don't get it when the steering wheel is straight or turning to the left. Does anybody have any input on what this could be or the fix for it?

Is the vibration thru the steering wheel or chassis?

I know you said you got into a wreck, what was damaged? any suspension parts, tie-rods, wheel bearings, or struts?

First, double check the torque on the lugs, then for any loose suspension parts on the left side. It could be a wheels bearing, but you'd get the common grinding sound if that were the issue.

The damage was on the driver's side so that's what I'm confused about. They replaced the lower and upper tie rods, lower control arm, front support member. The vibration is coming through the steering wheel.

It's funny you mention lugnuts because I actually broke a lugnut key trying to get the lugnuts off after the collision shop impacted them on. I eventually got them off so I could bleed my brakes and put some stainless steel brake lines on. So I know that the torque on the lugs is not the issue because I was getting the vibration before and after messing with the lugnuts. If the vibration happens when turning the steering wheel to the right then why would I look for loose suspension parts on the left side? Maybe I'm missing something here. I will listen for some grinding sound to see if it is the wheel bearings.

Please keep giving me your input. I appreciate it very much.

With the steering wheels, i would always check the wheels, but it sounds like you have. How bad was the impact. have you checked the bottom of the steering wheel where it goes into the column( i think, down by the peddles)

I just thought about something else. motor mounts. if one is weak, there would likely be imbalance causing vibration.

The impact wasn't that bad. I will have to check the motor mounts. I know they replaced the front support member that the center motor mount connects to but I had them reuse my Forge polyurethane bushing. I'm thinking I need to put it up on a lift and recheck everything.

I first thought maybe the wheels were off balance but after moving them around I still get the same vibration. I also thought maybe it was the alignment but that's been redone as well.

I say check the left because you weight the left side of the car when you turn right ... weight transfer.

If they overtightened the lugs, there is a small change that the hub could be warped. Especially if they just went in a circle around the lugs, which a lot of shops do sadly.

If they replaced the tie rods, double check the lock nut on the lower tie rod ... I'd say left, but check both ... lol. Also, have someone rock the wheel left and right with the car on stands and look at the inner tie rod joint for play and listen for any knocking.

Thanks Matt. I'll try all those. I just had the driver side lca off this weekend too while reinstalling the Whiteline RCK. I did a cursory look at the tie rod while it was off. It sucks that all my tools are up in Tennessee and I'm down here with a basic tool set.

I was going to say what ever the problem is look on the left of the front suspension because of the weight transfer....thats how I knew my wheel bearings were going. They'd stop making a sound when I turned to either direction.

Thanks everybody for the input. It looks like I need to buy some tools to have down here.
