--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I was cruising on the hwy in 5th today when I saw uncoming traffic in my lane. I dropped to fourth, accelerated then shifted back into 5th. Well, when I shifted into 5th the clutch pedal went completely to the floor...and stayed there! I just knew that I had blown my motor. I coast to the side of the road and the car is still running fine. I look underneath the car for leaks and the coast was clear. Lifted the hood and everything seemed fine?!? I shut the car off and the pedal was instantly hard as a rock. I call over a friend who has worked on a few evos and he we tried to bypass the clutch. He adj the slave cylinder under the hood to where it would stay stuck in an "open" position. We were able to start it and shift to through the gears. At that point I knew that the motor and tranny were fine. I was less than a mile away from my house so I drove it and shifted clutchless home. Yes, I know it thats not recommended but I got home safely. The weird part about it was that the car shifted and drove like it did off the showroom floor. I went ahead and purchased a clutch set and flywheel today too. My main concern that there is something more than just a clutch install. I called another friend, who used to work on my galant vr4, and he stated to me that it sounds more like a hydraulic problem and that a clutch replacement wont help.

*Also my clutch had been chattering and slipping real bad for the past couple of weeks.

Has anyone ever heard of this happening? Ideas? Suggestions?

Thanks in advance

Dude you have serious EVO troubles....lol!

Yeah I do. There may be a going out of evo sale soon...hint hint. silver jdm rear, grouppe -s brakes, IX leather/suede seats, jdm mr tails, custom headlights, fmic with piping, etc...

Lol Im eyeing possibilites as we speak. Maybe an evo x, nsx, or that "to die for" nissan...lol...but im serious.

Evo X- keep the boost and awd plus they look hot in white, lowered, with wheels
NSX- nice curb appeal but slow
?!?- boost, awd, curb appeal, no complaints

Lol lets see how tomorrow goes :(:D

Sux man. That does sound more like a hydraulic problem than an issue with the clutch itself.

What clutch is in right now. I remeber reading about a clip of some sort breaking on the clutch and the peddle not come back up! I will look around!

Im hoping that the slave cylinder is bad. The problem is IF it is bad trying to source one quickly. Either way the clutch was starting to slip bad. It was an Exedy twin.

I can tell you everything you want to know about psychotropic medication but Im completely lost when it comes to clutches. Can you or anyone give me more info on a "hydraulic problem"?

yeah sounds either like the clutch slave is going bad... or you have tons of air in the lines bleed the whole system... and check for leaks... upgrade your clutch line while your at it... 50 bucks and then if it does the same thing has to be the slave thats what it sounds like to me... when i had the 240 issue it ended up being the slave and to much air

Damn it! Why are all the good shops so far away from me! Its driveable but Duluth and Marietta are both far from me.

Air in the line can cause premature clutch failure due to excessive slipping. Keep it simple, bleed the system thoughly, and replace slave cylinder while you are right there. What type of fluid are you using? Can't a slave cylinder leak cause it to get on the clutch causing slippage? Is your master cylinder level low?

So is the clutch actually moving at all? This actually happened to 2 of my friends who both have the same clutch kits. The clutch, as it turns out, has a really shitty TOB and my buddy just dropped his trans today and sure enough his TOB was done for. It split in half and it happened under the same conditions.

UPDATE

Replaced the slave cylinder this morning. At that point we became 100% positive that it was the clutch. When I purchased the car I was told that it had an Exedy twin in it. I never really verified it at the time. SO within the last hour I found this out.

The BAD NEWS is the clutch is toast.

The GOOD NEWS is that the clutch can be rebuilt because it's a...(drum roll plz)

Its a Cusco/Exedy Twin Disc. Apparently Exedy makes the Cusco clutches. The Cusco Twin Disc is the exact same as the Exedy SD Twin Disc. The flywheel and pressure plate are fine. Yes I will order a new throw out bearing for it. Yes, I will be buying a rebuild kit for it too. Yes I will be selling it. Ideas on pricing?

Why are't you going to keep it after rebuilding it? Are you going with a better clutch?

If and when you replace the clutch, if you are having the same issues replace the lines. I had the same issues and replaced my lines with AMS SS Upper and lower clutch lines. When I had my rebuild done they left it on and draped it over the side of my car and there were some hairline fractures in it. Those were enough to make me have a day like you had. Only thing is I was 30 minutes from home.....glad you figured it out but keep this in mind if you have other issues or the same one again.

She's BACK!!! Man it feels good to drive an evo again. Big Shout out to Richard and Melissa @ Competition Clutch. The new set up feels great! Not as heavy as the old clutch but its all good because my direction has changed on what I want to do with my evo. Im content with making a little over 400 to the wheels on pump. I have to admit that Exedy/Cusco Twin disc looks sick! Im going to buy the rebuild kit then Im going to sell it or swap it out for a IX turbo and cams. Eitherway Im just glad to have her back! Rant over. Laters

So , how long is the break in period? 500 miles , 1000?

Psych

Technically there isnt a break in period but for S&G lets say 250 miles. Or at least thats what I was told

Sorry about that I guess it would help If I paid attention lol.

So basicaly what benefits does the JWT set up have? I see that it will be louder which isnt a major concern but if you had to compare it to the stock clutch as far as driveability and performance what did you get out of it?
