View Full Version : What other routine maintenance do you address when changing your oil?

What other regular maintenance you do besides cleaning/replacing your air filter and changing your oil? I have read that I need to change out my pcv valve every 3-10 months. I also need to change out my drivetrain fluid pretty soon.

i have a bad problem of checkin my air pressure in my tires lol....i dunno why either and aint really figured out what PSI i should run. i also rotate them more often than i should lol

I'm bad about not checking the tire pressure. That reminds me...

I'm not sure what it's set at right now. Firestone adjusted the air pressure back in July when I got an alignment. I will check tomorrow.

I run 34 PSI on the street. Brett I do drivetrain fluids 7500-10000 cause i drive it hard. i think 15000 is recomended. Haven't heard of replacing the PCV as a maintenance item but I deleted mine anyway so it don't matter.

I am seriously considering doing my own drivetrain fluid swap. How hard is it? Btw, where the heck is the pcv valve on the Evo? I'm not sure what I'm looking for.

Actually the manual says you can do it every 30k, but I do it every 15-20k. I don't drive it uber hard though. I mean hell... I just took it to the drag strip for the 1st time the other day, but I'm going to my 1st autox next weekend and i'll be changing the fluids shortly after that.

PCV valve is on the back side of the valve cover. itthe contraption near the oil cap. Driveline fluids are easy to do but you need 4 jack stands cause the car has to be level & off the ground when you do it.

every oil change i calculate my oil blow by and change rings on my piston.

Yea... Forgot about that. Drivetrain fluids are easy. I've got a friend here that has a lift, so I always do it there. What I do when I cant though is I jack the car up. Start draining and then lower the car, so its level since I don't have 4 jackstands. Other than that its just like changing your oil, but I do recommend a pump to make it easier.

and i need to go pick up the engine oil from tray.

What kind of oil filters do you guys use?

A good look over while I have the car in the air. I also check all my lower intercooler couplings, don't want any boost leaks!

I have always used oem, but since all my fluids are amsoil, I am changing to the amsoil IX filter. Supposely better filtration and cheaper with my perferred customer price.

My buddy always says use a "cheaper" filter, not sure why I think he likes the flow through better, so I usually just do a cheap Fram one, LOL

I have been using the Fram synthetic filters. I would get OEM, but I don't live near any dealerships.

I've also heard that the cheaper filters are better fuse the high quality ones will reduce oil flow.

At least from what I learned in school the OEM filters have an bypass valve in case the filter gets clogged. Those who use Amsoil oil and filters. Is it true you can go longer than 3k miles before an oil change? Isn't it like 7-9k?

thats why you buy in cases of 24.

i have a account set up at gainesville one. you can go and tell them you is from evo se and they will give it to you for 10% over cost.... or whatever the shops get it for...

It is true, BUT To do so Amsoil suggestes getting the oil test done and going from there. That way you see at what mileage the oil starts to break down. I still change at 3000 though. Just wanted a good oil for my baby.

I can't say that I blame you about using a quality oil, Jon. Especially when you have a lot invested in your car. Thanks for the tip Joey! 24 is a lot to buy at one time, but that would probably be all I'd ever need.

I have a quick qestion to ask, instead of searching around. What type of fluid do the differentials take for the rs?

em1toevo
09-10-2009, 08:36 AM
I believe they are the same for the GSR. The MR is the only one that needs different fluids.

You will need both of them to do the whole drivetrain. There are other brands out there if you don't want to stay with oem fluids.
