View Full Version : Just couldn't leave it alone...

So I have this problem of not being able to leave any car alone =( Anyways, over the last week me and a friend have been working on the R34. These motors are strong as hell from the factory, but I wanted to make replace a few parts just to be safe about it. With this is mind the first order of business was to replace the head gasket with a stronger, thicker Tomei gasket and replace the OEM headstuds with a set or ARP's. We quickly found out that in order to do this pretty much everything had to come off of the motor. This includes, intake, turbos, manifolds, intake mani, tb's (6 ITB), radiator, IC piping, fuel rail and injectors, vacuum lines, oil lines, water lines, fan, and much more. We also decided to do Tomei o2 dumps and Tomei exhaust manifolds while the turbo's were off. Here are a few pictures from out progress over the last couple days. Everything is about to go back on and a few more parts should be showing up this week. ;)

Oh, and I know I've lost my mind ;)

Looking into the lower engine bay--leads me to speculate that previous owner
babied this car.

-In most developing/third world countries you'll notice sticky-like sand/debri under the car vs. what you see in the states like grime, tar or racoons. Considering this is a over a million yen car, chances the car never seen poor rural community roads.

-My last visit to my home country(Nigeria): I've seen a Evo 5 driving by this spoil'd,rich brat(the engine bay of that car was completely caked in sand.)Beautiful car but dumb kid.

Well done, man. Keep us updated.

Ya, I have found a good bit of unique stuff on this car. The car is in very good condition and we have not found anything that really stands out in a negative way. It's so different working on this motor as it actually is a good bit different than the motors I am used to seeing. I'll post up more pictures tomorrow. The head, cams, and turbo's are back on now.

More pics!

Manifolds and o2s are on the turbo's, turbo's are back on the car, head is back on, cams are back in, new timing belt is on, valve timing cover and valve cover are also back on. Seems like we are making decent progress at least.

why not change out the water pump and oil pump while your in there? just asking :) always heard to change the water pump when doing a timing job :)

just saying prob sooner or later its prob going to end up looking like this :-p

and prob making some stupid amount of power like this

and is prob going to be a hybrid rb30det :-D

o just something i've been reading up on... the red gt-r valve cover... i know it looks cool and all :-P but i've been reading up it causes a lot of heat underneath and eventually cases coil packs to go back... very quickly :)

o and if you go bigger turbo later on down the road :) let me know i could use that one if you want to sell it :-D!

One step at a time. I havn't even driven the car over 25mph. The water and oil pumps will be done in due time, but as of now they are not going out and thats another 1500-2000 I don't have to spend right now. I'll be on factory turbo's, etc for awhile so I see no reason to replace them as of now. On the R34 it's not needed to do the oil pump until you plan to rev above 8000. The Red Valve cover is stock, just like the Red one that comes on the Evo's. It has nothing to do with whether it looks cool or not. How much would you buy my factory turbo's for? ;)

I meant if I tried to own all those cars I would have to finance my life away....so when I get envious of someone such as you getting all these sick cars (and modifying them) the only thing I can take comfort in is the fact that I don't have to make a car note. Other then that I will just sit here and live through you and the cool shit you buy.

I hear ya man. I have been fortunate enough to have some fun toys, but I really would like to get into a house. I have been looking for awhile and would gladly sell one of my cars if I needed a down payment on a house. I'm envious of anyone who has found a house they love ;)

You just have to work with your budget. You having your car paid off is more than most can say. At least you have taken care of that first :) Your car is nothing to look down on either ;)

Thats what I try to hold on to when I have to be an adult and not spend money on what I want but whats needed. I actually sacrificed a really nice Honda civic hatchback (ITR motor, turbo kit, volks, JDM everything) to get into the house we're in. We've outgrown it but with my wife not working I'm just blessed to be able to hold on to what we have.

That being said....I'm still a kid at heart so sometiems even though its the right thing to do I still get annoyed when I have ot be an adult and do whats right as opposed ot what I want.
No stranger to sacrificing. Funny thing is before I bought the car I would always say to my wife....I just want an EVO...or a nice car for that matter....I don't care if its not as fast as I'd like it.....boy did I lie to her.

Ryan, what do you do for work? The car looks great.

I'm not familar with what hp these can put out on stock turbos?

TripperFx3
08-26-2009, 01:19 AM
I believe on the stock twins they can put out over 400whp, but it's pushing the efficiency range of the turbos (most of the time, again it depends on octane and boost levels). I can't remember what size turbos they use, but I believe they are still garrett units. I don't believe they went to IHI on the Skylines.

BlewByYouEvoVIII
08-26-2009, 01:33 AM
400 stock turbos, but a simple fuel upgrade and drop in turbo replacements is known to put out a solid 550-600whp stock block. (very common setup similar to the Mine's R34)

You gonna put that thing on a track one day to see how she compares to the Evo at the edge? Road course of course. Just make sure you get track insurance if you do. I found out it's not too expensive but definately worth the peace of mind especially with something like that.

Working the shifter isn't hard ... it's the performance driving parts ... the first time I tried the heel/toe I nearly grabbed the driver's door. It weird how your mind and muscle memory is programmed for driving.
