View Full Version : evo x data logging?

I got my openport 2.0 cable in this week and would like to start pulling some logs from my evo x to check for any knock. It's my first crack at applied ecu tuning, so I'm a bit lost in all the jargon and just want to take baby steps for now. To make matters worse, the evo x ecu is still pretty much uncharted territory so following all the dev discussions is a bit much if you don't already have experience with this stuff.
anyone here doing any logging an X yet? I'm trying to get EvoScan to work, but following the 50-page thread on Evo-M is like trying to figure wtf is going on at a conference for rocket scientists with ADHA
and fwiw, my wideband should be here sometime this week, too :) any suggestions on the install, as far as cable routing goes, and a shop to weld the bung without screwing it up?

I've had my cable for months but I have yet to try anything.
Check w/ Touring Bouble for assistance.
As far as getting the wideband installed, check with Forged if they are able to weld on a bung for you

From what I know, there is not a way to log all needed parameters on the X. There are a couple of apps that can log generic OBDII values using the Open Port 2.0 cable, but not the really important values like load, WGDC% or Knock.
EvoScan is supposed to have support for the X, but I couldn't tell you when that would be available. Hamish has been a little slow with updates recently.

as far as the wideband goes, there are a few gromments on the fire wire but they are a bitch to get too. just have to be patient in gettin the wire through, also belive there is one in the drivers side floorboard under the carpet. i used the one thats above the pedals but its no fun lol. where are ya mountin the wideband? cat, downpipe. weld it in yourself if you have a welder save ya a few pennies

I'm pretty sure it can log load, wgdc and knock atm, but you have to make a slight modification to the ROM first. You have to enable something called 'Mode23'. To do this, you create 3 new tables in EcuFlash and change their values. Then the latest 2 betas of EvoScan will work.
I think Cobb AP and some other proprietary tools are able to log without modifying the ECU at all, which is preferable, but the open source guy's are doing it another way for now.
I'll keep plugging away. I have my modified ROM ready, just gotta work up the balls to reflash ;) If I get anywhere, I'll share what I find

Good to know! I don't have a 2.0 cable yet as I don't generally deal with the X.

I got one if you wanna borrow it Matt?
You got any X's close to you?

ok, verified that the Mode23 rom hack works! just took a spin around sandy springs and logged the trip. The values in evoscan look reasonable. I tried to do some 3rd gear pulls as best I could (not many good open areas in this part of town). I got some knock around 4k RPM, but I want to do more runs before I'm sold on that.
After reflashing, it did throw a CEL which I haven't yet checked. Not too worried though. Anyone interested in a run down of what you gotta do to enable logging? Preferably a shop who can install a wideband o2 bung in exchange for me doing the legwork :D lol

There are a couple around, but no one interesting in tuning. No clue why ... lol. One is a BSP autocross car and could get more power and stay in his class and just doesn't want to ...
Let me finish up with a couple of current customers (including Andy who has been waiting for a few weeks) and get back to you on it. I appreciate the offer.

Yea, I been following some of your posts on Evo-m in the datalogging and tuning section. Nice work on Brad's car! I can't believe how horrible the 52680015 was running. When I bought my car, I demanded thatthey put the 52680020 ROM on it. I baseline dynod at 280hp/285tq on a land and sea dynomite. They had to recheck everything a few times because they though it seemed high. It was all right, and they dynod about a dozen other cars that day. *shrug* maybe I picked a lucky Evo :) PM me if you want a copy of the stock rom to play with.
I know the g-force meters aren't perfect, but DANG! that thing seems slow! My old 2.4l NA FWD ralliart almost ran that. What kind of dyno do you guys have? Seems like a heart breaker :)
BTW, my LC-1 just came in today and I gotta get it installed. Were you able mount it vertically with enough clearance, or did you have to angle it?
Anyone in ATL want to help me weld the bung in? I'll show ya how to get evoscan working with the X and let you use my openport 2.0 cable :D

280/285 out of a stock X...damn that's high, most people see 220-240 don't they?
I'm using DatalogLab...send me a 3rd gear pull on flat ground and your ROM and I'll run it though for comparison to Brad's car if you'd like to see it.
I think brad has the bung coming out at 3' oclock

I'll mail you the CSV files. I did the logs with Mode23_logger instead of EvoScan. It's easier hit up/enter during a road tune instead of messing with the mouse :) The run's weren't perfect, but they should be good enough. It's the best I could do on the way to Fry's and back to get a serial->usb converter for my wideband :D Kinda odd how inconsistent the knock is.
Here's some graph porn

BTW, CTRL+Space starts logging in EvoScan. Pretty easy.

thanks for sending me the log file. I ran it through DLL with the exact same settings as my customer and here were your results vs his car with mbc, filter, tune: as I suspected 280awhp bone stock out of an X is pretty high, it's more like 236awhp according to DLL which is inline with what other stock X owners are seeing

I speak the truth. You are a great guy who knows his shit when it comes to tuning. My world is blah, BUT that just gives me time to start a new plan.
It involves forged internals, a switch, race gas and you! ;) how does that sound? Likely early next year, just because I wont be home til then :(

Thanks for the comparison, Chris! Yea, I suspected that was too good to be right. Do you find the simulated dyno to be pretty accurate and consistent in DLL? Better than the HP/TQ graph in Evo scan? It might be worth the $50 :)

no problem. yep, I like DLL much better than Evoscan, I get repeatable results. I haven't tried the built in evoscan dyno software in a long time so maybe it's better now. The problem with DLL is it's not free and it's a huge bitch to set up.
