View Full Version : Want opinion on turbo set-up

So as most of you know I have a FP Green along with pretty much every supporting mod. Well a friend of mine here with a IX has the same basic set up only he has some custom GSC 280 cams over my HKS 272's and him and I are dead even in pulls on the highway. Well he raced a few other local evo's VIII's and IX's and got his ass handed to them and they are both on IX turbos no meth. So what I'm thinking is I may just go with a IX turbo as it seems to be the lag that kills him and I (keep in mind were at 4500 feet and 91 octane) and I don't get full boost til around 3800 and him around 3600. So if I sold my green or traded it for a IX and some cash would I really get that much spool and would it make it more competitive around autox and road course events? If I do this I'm debating on going with either meth or get a race gas tune with the extra money. Any constructive opinions are welcome. Mind you I have raced porsches and such on the highway and had no problems beating them lol.

What are you revving too?
Highway racing it's a top end game. That is what you want. Lag isn't that big of a deal in my eyes when you are shifting at 7800 rpms.
I would keep the setup. And run an Smc meth kit. Your buddy could of had a boost leak or something. If you lose you can always jump up to a red. ;)

What kind of Porsche makes a big difference. I got some nasty turbo's up here if you fell like making the drive! LOL. I had read once that the Fp Red's were grenading on people, but nobody was complaining since FP was replacing them for free. It might just be rumors. Have you researched the BBK?

I agree with ZEN. As you know I have a IX, meaning I HAD a IX turbo. As you also know, I have a RED now. Yes the IX spooled quickly but can not hold steam up top too well. When I was in Utah, same piss 91 you have, I ran the SMC kit. I got tired of always looking down to make sure the thing was spraying. that is when I decided to build me an all boost beast instead.
On your friend racing the local issues I would ask a few questions.
1. Did he maybe have a boost leak?
2. Was he in the correct gear?
3. Was he brake-boosting?
4. Could the opponents be not devulging ALL info. ( i.e, could they have more mods than told like a built bottom-in
Not in ANY way questioning your tune, car and any thing. Also realizing that you do run on 91. I think you should keep the green, if anything go up not down. How does your car hold up-top. I recently got re-tuned by Mellon. My personal car holds very well up-top, and actually does NOT want to stop. Maybe you could use some tweaking, maybe not. All things considered, maybe the other drivers were better drivers than your friend. Here is my graph if you were interested.

I think I would get tired of Meth. Too much to worry about.

I was leaning more towards a race gas regardless and I may just look into the BBK. To be honest I do think the evo IX (not my buddy) is running something hes not telling us. Hes running a 12.2 in the quarter supposedly with just a tbe, intake, MBC and tune on a IX which up at this altitude is unheard of, so its possible, but the VIII I know is running a IX Turbo and HKS 280's and all supporting mods. I dunno... It's possible they are running e-85 since the shop that sponsors them drives out to Cali and buys it in bulk lol.
