My Evo VIII owner's manual calls for Mobil 10W-30.

They use Mobil 1 10w-30 from the factory I believe.

A few years ago, I got to Walmart to buy my oil for the Evo, and bought Mobil One 5w-30 by mistake. I think I used it in the Eclipse instead and hope it didn't hurt anything. i was pissed, cause i thought the evo manual called for that, but i was wrong.

I always get 10W-30. It's an all-year-'round weight. The 5W-30 is better for summer months, from what I've been told.

I think it was winter when I bought the 5W-30 by mistake. Anyways, I got an early oil change that time and didn't go all the way to 3000 miles like I usually do.

If you're eating through oil try putting some moly in there too.

moly? If hes burning through that much oil he may have another issue. It's common for turbo cars to burn oil. By the time I do an oil change I normally have 3 qts left, but if your not even due for an oil change and are that low something may be wrong.

Something may be wrong, but you can never really go wrong with a little bit of moly. It will help condition a lot of the seals.

lol Sorry I was asking what moly is. I haven't heard of it.

5W-30 and 10W-30 are basically the same at operating temp. In colder climates, you might consider a 5W-30 in the winter because it flows better at lower temps. However, a quality synthetic 10W-30 should not have problems at below freezing temps. As a note, the "W" means winter ...

I would not use a 5W-20 as it's thinner than either the 5W-30 or the 10W-30 and would not protect the turbo as well.

If you're topping off your oil, you can mix weights ... it doesn't matter. As long as you aren't mixing a synthetic with a conventional you'll be fine.

I have not heard of moly either. Good post TouringBubble about the oils. My oil gets changed every 3000 miles and I never have to add any oil in between. The dipstick seems to always stay on full.

Ok, thanks for setting the record straight Matt. I had my facts crossed. 5 is better for winter and 10 is fine year round.

I run mobile 10w30. But I recently purchased a Lancer Evo Magazine while in Japan and in the maintenance section it mentions 10w50. More specfically HKS 10w50 turbo engine oil. Any thoughts or comments on this, I was just curious?

Mouse, you probably could run the 10W-50 ... it depends on the engine and turbo's ability to flow the thicker oil.

Basically, to super simplify things, for the most wear protection you want to run the highest weight that the engine/turbo can flow. If you use a high quality synthetic, then the Evo can probably handle a XW-50.

However, if using a high quality synthetic you shouldn't need heavier oil. Heavier oil requires more energy to move and therefore reduces horsepower in most cases. So, or the most power you want to run the easiest flowing oil that will still lubricate everything and not break down.

So, it's a balance game ... protection and longevity versus performance. No oil will deliver the absolute best of both worlds, though some claim to. There are some oils that do a really good job of both, such as AMSOIL 0W-30 Signature Series, which is my #1 recommendation for people who want the absolute best oil. The standard AMSOIL 10W-30 is great oil too and that's what I use due to cost.

Mobil1 Extended Performance is also good, and there is a new full synthetic out that I saw at Advance the other day ... can't remember the name but it's specifically compares itself to standard Mobil1, which means it's likely on par with the Mobil1 EP (a true synthetic). It's also really affordable and worth a try if you're looking to cut maintenance costs.
