Sup yall,
This may be in the wrong section but which US Spec Evo had black housing headlights? Im thinking that all of the IX's did but Im not sure. Reason being is that Im looking for a set for my VIII. I have the factory fogs and I think some of the IX's dont. Someone shed some light on the subject so I can search through "part-out" and FS threads for some. Thanks in advance.

The IX headlights have black chrome inside. I think all the flat black ones are JDM. You can always take yours apart & paint em.

I think shudder is correct! I will tell you this, i have a regular IX and do NOT have fogs!

Your best bet is to paint them yourself. There is a great write up on evom. I plan on doing mine in the next couple weeks. I've already done my taillights.

Mine are painted. I'll have pics of them posted later tonight, but shunder is right. The JDM's are flat and the Evo IX's have black chrome

Thnx again guys. I already have the IX tails.
Are the IX headlights the same black chrome color as the tails?
**If so, i will search for a set. Ive always wainted to try to paint the headlights myself but I dont want to risk screwing them up.

Thermite with a magnesium fuse always gives me the desired effect.

Yes. The IX headlights are black chrome, but I think it's not quite as dark as the rear for some reason. Not sure though. You may also be able to find JDM style or painted ones for sale if you don't want to risk yours.

I like the turn signal on the bottom but I can't justify paying that much money to buy JDM headlights just to move the signal.

^ When you pull yours apart to black out the insides you can move the turn signal. You just pop the amber relector off the top (or leave it if you want to have amber from top to bottom) & paint the inside of the lense for the lower reflector amber. I have some Kandy paints so I could paint the lense for you if ya want. Then just replace the bulbs.

yeah, that's the only thing i would better.... amber all the way to the top. that would be niiiiiice. it looks good.

I was not aware you could do that but now that I do I'll look at doing this. I'm going to be painting my headlights in a couple weeks when I get back up to my house in Tennessee. I'll be taking my son to the Nickelback concert in Nashville for his birthday. Yeah, I know, I'm a cool dad.
jktripp

but that also has the hole for 'cold' air, right? and that top piece being amber would just complete it..

Yes it's a headlight duct but it looks much better than any others I've seen. I think I could do that mod, but I dont't want to risk messing up my headlight.

He removed the driver side fog light & high beam. I don't use either of those so it wouldn't cause a problem for me.
jktripp

i dont have fogs, so the hole wouldnt have to go far over, and i could keep my high beam...... right? i have a dummy look-a-like hole for where the fogs woudl be. inner most 'light'.

i was going to say i have my stockers sitting here and you could try it on them.... but they were crushed in the crash.... it's my stock tails i have...... i think my mind tries to block out the accident.....
jktripp
02-15-2009, 02:57 PM
if i had those stockers i would let you play with them..... i dont have another car to drive while you would have mine... i got a bike, but it would rain everyday while you had my lights out of the car.

I've never taken a headlight apart so I'm not sure. All he did was remove the lense & cut it out with a dremel then used a piece of black hose to cover the cut lense edge. It looks great, but I think over time you would get crap under the remaining lense that would be hadrd to keep clen because it's no longer sealed.

ok, we have been thinking about how to seal the lens and think about this shunder....
jktripp
02-15-2009, 06:42 PM
1) seperate housing from lens
2) drill out fake fog light inside housing, and put piping in and then seal it from the back
3) dremmel lens in circle to only have hole that fits pipe diameter
4) pipe sits flush with lens and that is where you seal lens to the new intake pipe with the same adhesive you use to seal the lens back to the housing.

Sorry. I like the sound of crickets. Go to photobucket.com & register an account. It's free & easy to use. Anyhow that sounds like it would work but I'm not sure how hard it would be to get it resealed & not look like crap. We would need some sort of trim ring that would cover the inlet edge & clean it up a bit. Would be much easier if I had some welding skills.

shunderwunder
02-15-2009, 07:42 PM
Ninja skills would be heplfull.
As far as welding goes we could get a metal pipe angle cut to sit flush with the lense then weld a flange on it that could be used to seal it to the lense.
jktripp
02-15-2009, 07:45 PM
would it have to be a metal pipe?
shunderwunder
02-15-2009, 07:50 PM
No. I was just saying that it would make things easier to seal up having a pipe angled flusw with the lense & with flange to mount it.
jktripp
02-15-2009, 07:53 PM
what ab plastic tubing... would that seal easier to seal to the lens (plastic to plastic) and then we would just have to think of something cosmetically pleasing to fit as a trim around hole of lens... maybe. just some thoughts

Of course the second one took a whole lot less time. I'll get some pictures up when I get back to Atlanta. I think they look good. They definitely complete the look I was going for.

Thank you both. I also think they turned out well. The hardest part was reassembly. Since I was using a heatgun I had to reheat the sealant one part at a time. I read that using the oven might be easier but I wanted to control where the heat was going. I didn't get any unnecessary burns using this method. I also ran a bead of silicone sealant just to make sure that I got everything sealed.

Very nice. I like the blacked out signal.
I was seriously debating if I wanted to spray paint that part. It comes off separately from the main chrome piece. After going back and forth on it I just decided to just paint it. It makes the turn signal a little bit harder to see when it is blinking. That's the only downfall I can see.

Thanks. Are you going to use the oven method or use a heatgun?
em1toevo
03-02-2009, 08:20 PM
I haven't decided yet. I have always heard of folks doing the oven method. The heat gun seems like a real hands-on approach(ie. Ouch!). I plan on tackling some of these projects(Re-clearing the Brembos, heads and tails blacked out, sidemarkers smoked, etc...) this summer while I'm out of school.
Chemwarrior
03-02-2009, 08:48 PM
I've done all those except reclearing my Brembos, which I need to do. The easiest thing to do was smoke the sidemarkers. The second easiest was the taillights. That of course leaves the headlights as the hardest. Next I'm looking at recoloring my HVAC control lights to a color that more matches the center cluster.
The heatgun wasn't that difficult to use. The sealant heats up surprisingly fast. The biggest problem was cleaning up my flat tipped screwdrivers after using them as pry devices.
em1toevo
03-03-2009, 11:53 AM
I'll defintely have to remember that. Thanks for the tip. I'll pick up some cheap screwdrivers that I won't mind messing up.
