View Full Version : Is a new flywheel worth getting when replacing the clutch?

Well it finally happened. My clutch is slipping big time. I was driving up to Tennessee yesterday and noticed serious slippage when I would hit the accelerator in fifth gear. I know I'm going to get the ACT MB7-HDSS but was wondering if it is worth the additional money to get a lighter flywheel. I know that Gruppe-S has a good one for a reasonable price and they are also running a deal on the combo. What do you guys think?

Not a fan of that clutch, but I would suggest getting the flywheel. For the ~$230 it costs, you may as well put it in since labor on the clutch job is nuts anyway.

The clutch on my VIII went out at 33,000 and I replaced it with the ACT. I really liked it. I know people will say all day long to get the Exedy Twin and the ACT has lock out issues, but I never had any problems with mine. I was running under 400 hp and there were no issues what so ever. Also had the stock flywheel resurfaced but I was making a lot less money then. If you are gonna be in there replacing the clutch, might as well do the flywheel too.

I know that some people complain about lockout but from what I've read it usually is caused by installation problems. I don't need anything more than that. I know that most people are going to recommend the Exedy Twin but I believe that goes above and beyond what my application requires.

We posted just about the same exact comments. Great minds think alike. Thanks for your advice about the flywheel. That has me sold.

Sounds exactly like what I told you on the phone :)

Yeah man, you'll be happy with that combo! Pedal is a little heavier than stock but driving on it for a week you won't even notice. Smooth engagement, just a good street clutch. Post your impressions when you get them installed!

Sounds good. I don't mind the heavier pedal feel. I have pm'd a lot of vendors trying to find the best deal out there so once that happens I'll order it and set up an appointment with Ryan to have them install it.

Isn't that funny how that worked out? :D Sounds kind of ironic.

Whatup Chemwarrior! Actually I installed the Act clutch & Flywheel combo on my VIII and it runs good so far. I had the Mb7-HDSS Flywheel instead of the pro-lite one and it's definitely worth the install if you don't want to do too much or too less for you Evo. I believe the combo's supposed to handle up to 600Hp if I can recall. The only thing I can recall when driving with it at WOT is that I can't shift gears smoothly or at all when past 7k rpm. Maybe that could be a lockout but I haven't experimented on that myth. Other then that, I havn't had any problems other then a faster rpm rise and to me the car feels alot lighter during acceleration. :)
btw, the evo pipe ya gave me was a non VIII and it couldn't fit all the hangers where it was supposed to bolt to. I made it fit pipe to pipe but without the correct bolt fitments; it's not stabilized and the only thing holding it down is the coupler clamps. but thanks anyway bro! I'mma get the ETS pipes in the future to prevent future loose ends. :D

How could it not have been from a VIII when that's exactly what I took it off of? That doesn't make any sense. As far as ETS pipes that is what I have on mine and love them. They just started selling the black silicone couplers as well. I wish they were selling those when I bought all my ETS piping.
Thanks for your experience on the ACT clutch. I've decided to get the MB7-HDSS with a lighter flywheel. It's really frustrating not being able to drive the car hard. Oh well. I guess I'll just have to wait until everything is installed and broken in.

I run the ACT clutch & ACT streetlight flywheel on my car & love them. I do NLTS at 7000+ RPM on a somewhat regular basis & have had no lockout issues or slipping. It has a near stock feel (I could'nt tell the diffrence) & handles a good amout of power without issue. If you want a good street clutch then I say ACT is the way to go. As far as the flywheel is concerned I cant give you any real info there. I smoked my stock clutch & didn't want to risc not replacing the flywheel. When my car was down for the clutch is when I did 80% of my mods so a performace increase on the flywheel wasn't noticed on its own.

I would change the flywheel, while they're in there why not......

Yea, I tried all if's & and's and what I installed were right. The bolt fitment didn't match my fitments. It's on for now but in my opinion not reliable for when I'd like to WOT. Daily driving would be fine with it on as it is. After I get the aftermarket piping, I'll be good to go! Thanks again though bud. G/L on the Act setup! The flywheel should be added on as well, it'll last you longer then your clutch.

Thanks for everybodies replies. I will definitely get the flywheel when I get my clutch. It's also good to hear that so many ACT clutch users are not having any of the reported problems. I figured is was problems that could have been avoided by proper installation.

That's why I did mine myself. No one to blame but me if there is a problem.

I also plan on getting that same clutch (and possibly the same flywheel) when my clutch decides to die. I hope you'll give us a great review once it's in there.

I have the same clutch and have had no lock out issues. Had the clutch for close to a year now and around 14k miles.

I just ordered my ACT MB7-HDSS with their Streetlite flywheel from Import DS. They had the best price around. It was actually amazing at the vast price differences between shops. The highest I was quoted was $970, but I got mine for $729. Kind of a shame that I didn't order this before ACT raised their prices.

I got the car back today and the clutch feels just like stock. It does grab a little harder though. That could be because I was used to my old one slipping. Unfortunately I have to take it easy for the first few hundred miles during the break in period. I really want to test this clutch out.

The breakin is worth it :D I would hate to see you back here in a few months with a burnt out clutch because you were haulin azz everywhere :P

Have no worries. I will definitely adhere to the break in period. I can't see spending another ~$1400 just because I couldn't control myself.

Thats what I love about the ACT. It feels almost stock.
Break in time on any mod sucks. It's so hard to drive normally, but definately worth it in the end.

Nice clutch Dan. I really want one when my stocker dies. Does it still grab well when the engine/tranny is cold? I can't decide if my stock clutch likes to slip when it's cold, or if the tranny is just not as responsive when it's cold.

I'm still in the break-in period but it definitely grabs hard the whole time; from start up to turn off.

Did your OEM one slip when it was cold?
